Breast implant surgery is an extremely popular surgery in many countries. Every year millions of women choose to do this surgery. Women need increased size of breasts for various purposes which is achieved by breast implants, and so a lot of women get attracted to this surgery.
Why to Do Breast Implant Surgery?
There are mainly two purposes behind breast implant surgery:
- Cosmetic: To increase size and shape of breast
- Reconstructive: To get back the breast mound after surgical removal of natural breast, like that done in breast cancer
Types of Breast Implants
Two kinds of breast implants are usually done.
- Saline implants
- Silicone gel implants
Both of these have their own pros and cons. However, the one with silicone is the most popular amongst the two. In the saline implants, sterile salt water is used, while in silicone implant, anything from a gel, a solid (similar to plastic) or a liquid is used.
Breast implants usually last for 10 to 15 years, after which you may need to replace them.
Some other kinds of implants are implants filled with soya bean oil or hydrogel. French PIP implants are also available. All these have undergone controversies. So, while choosing to do the surgery, you should take your surgeon’s advice.
Breast implant surgery is usually done under general anesthesia. The procedure takes about 1 to 1 and a half hour.
An incision is made in the skin close to the breast/s to be treated. Your surgeon will let you know where the scars will be. Next, the implant is placed between your chest muscle and breast tissue, or behind the chest muscle. After the implants are kept in place, your surgeon stitches the cut and covers it with a dressing.
You can go home usually on the same day of surgery. But sometimes you may need to stay overnight in the hospital. After returning to home, you will have to learn to take things easy in the beginning. Slowly you will get habituated and return to your normal routine, probably within 4 to 6 weeks.
Initially, you may feel worried if your breasts are looking unnatural. But this is a temporary feeling and soon you will feel normal.
Before undergoing breast implant surgery, you should be aware of the potential risk factors. These are some of the problems that may occur after the breast implant surgery:
- Bleeding or infection
- Rupture of implant
- Scar tissue shrinking around the implant (this is known as capsular contracture)
- Permanent or temporary change in nipple sensation
- Folded or creased implant
You may need to undergo another surgery to treat any problems developed after the surgery.
