Which is the most boring part of a dental treatment? The long time it takes. Any other disease treatment takes 1 or 2 visits to the doctor to get cured, except it is some serious ailment. However, a dental treatment, especially orthodontic treatment to correct the faults in teeth takes a hell of a time and we have to perform literally a penance to get beautiful teeth. However, this picture is soon hoped to get changed for better. A new orthodontic technique will now move teeth almost more than twice as fast as conventional orthodontics, thereby reducing the treatment time to more than half. This will enable patients to rectify their teeth while putting on braces for a significantly shorter time. The technique is named micro-osteoperforation (MOP) and it has been developed by Mani Alikhani, associate professor of orthodontics and director of the Consortium for Translational Orthodontic Research, and Cristina Teixeira, associate professor and chairperson of the Department of Orthodontics at the College of Dentistry.
What is MOP?
Micro-osteoperforation is a technique in which a specially designed device is used to puncture a small hole in the upper jaw bone in many places, once the gum tissue is numbed. The New York University-patented device has a light detector. As soon as the device reaches a specific depth into the gum, the light turns on. The appliance is then pulled out and the procedure takes just less than a minute. The method causes a minor abrasion in the bone through the gum and the bone is made less dense, thus allowing teeth to move quicker.
The gum and bone heal fast and normal bone density is restored when braces come off. Patients may face a little discomfort later, but no side effects have occurred of this treatment. After the procedure is completed, there is no sign of injury or inflammation, the healing is complete just by the next day.
Can Be Performed on Anyone
MOP can be done on anyone of any age. And the patients can wear whichever type of braces they want. However the wearing period is reduced to less than half than that taken by conventional orthodontics.
Beautiful Smile in Short Time
MOP is especially useful for adults who want beautiful smile in a short period of time. E.g. if your big day is around the corner and you want to correct your smile before that, you can achieve that through MOP.
